Evaluation And Reflection

Week 1

15/03/2017

On this day I started my planing for my FMP first I had to set up my blog page so that all the information could be easy to read and just as easy to access. The way I put together my blog was to taler each post to every different section of the checklist n order. I made the blog post names the same as each section of the check list. Then I went to the second part of the checklist witch was to do a Rationale (100 words approx.) for I was given the opportunity to reflect on any number of skills ticks and what have you that I have acquired of the previues 7 units. I went for my vastly improved understanding and skills with using Photoshop.

16/03/2017

For this day I did the next three parts of the check list for the first I had to make a project concept of approximately 200 words. For this section I was given an opportunity to clearly explain the concept and aims of my project, the research and ideas that will support its development, what I anticipate I will be producing. So I said this.

(For my project I aim to make a 7-minute short film and a poster to market my short film for an audience. I will conduct primary research to find quantitative and qualitative results in the form of a survey and focus group, this will allow me to find out what direction I should take my film/poster in. I will complete secondary research and look at similar genres to find out about character and location development. Research will need to be completed into potential sounds and music heard in the film, as this is something I need to have a clear understanding of. I will also look at real life examples, such as Google’s self driven car and other similar stories. From all of my research I hope to produce and entertaining short film that will engage my target audience. I intend to film my project using a DSLR camera, tripod and audio equipment to film with. I have considered potential locations, such as a classroom for the computer scene, a train for the conflict scene and I will film the computer screen (I will need to consider how to do this without it having a glare). My poster will be set in a city scene for the main image with the name of the film, ‘City of Games’.)

I think that I did a good job as I have clearly said what I hope to create and also mentioned all the places I will look to get all the research I hope to acquire. I have also gone on to deatale with some of the locations and equipment I will use this may change as the production and planing goes on.

Then came the Evaluation (approx 50 words)This section provides an opportunity for me to explain how i will reflect on, and evaluate, my work, as both an on-going activity and at the conclusion of the project. The evaluation should be referenced. for this I will evaluate and reflect on each day, with written recordings. I will comment on my progress in detail with written and images to show what I have done that day.

On this day i finish off the rest of the sections they were a Project action plan and timetable and a Proposed Research sources and Bibliography (Harvard Format). the project action plan can be seen below.

As for my time table I intend to complete all of my initial planning and research by the 3rd May, and I will make sure that it is at a stage where I am able to move forward with my project and take the next step into production. I will continue to develop my research through May, if things come up. This will allow me to factor in cinema and location visits. I will complete my filmed production by the 5th June and the whole project will be submitted by the 12th June. This will allow me to gain feedback from my audience.

Finale is the research sources that I will but is a Harvard refrens format.

If were to do it any other way and better I would have looked harder to try and find more research sources for the bibliography.

Week 2

20/03/2017

Today i made mind maps of all my initial ideas for my short film. I had to identify genre, target audience and what the film might be about. I put all my initial ideas in to mind maps which can be seen below.

I chose the third on as my FMP as when righting it I was already finding it vastly easyer to thing of locations and character relation ships. the others had some potential but the locations were not very easy to access and had the problem that they were to close to areas were people go so we would find it hard to get the location at a time when no-one was around.

On this day I had to come up with a synopsis while thinking about my genre and target audiences. My Gere is a mix of murder mystery and technological films it is good that these are the Gere of films that my one has as theses are Gere's of films that I like to watch the most. As these are types of films that I like I decided to make my target audiences 17-18 yer old's who have a love for murder mystery's and technology. for my synopsis I did it as an overview which I broke up in to 4 parts.

I also did some interviews for primary research in that day I recorded the two interviews and have uploaded them to a different blog post but I will upload them below so you can see them.

Despite it not being long of giving me a big amount of information it did help me wright my script when it came to the two friends in what they say and do. I also got some information on my villain and if I should conceal his identity until the very end. All this information allowed me to think all lots of different ways I could make scenes better when it came to filming with the equipment we had at our disposal.

On this day i stated my secondary research the first thing on my list was to look at three films. These films had to be of the same or similar genre as the one I am planing to make for my production. From these three films I would be able to gain ideas. I would get information about the acting, style, costumes, locations ans narrative. To get this information I would have to deconstruct the three films that i will use. Three film that i chose are I Robot Total Recall from 1990 and finally Christine. I chose these films as they all exhibit on one way or another self driving cars which is the focus of my production.

Although they all exhibit self driving cars the cars them self are very different for starters the way total recall dose the main character get in to a cab which requires a location before it can start moving. I Robot is different in that film the cars go one their own without the main character, Spooner, having to do any thing. these cars can also switch from self driving to a mode in which Spooner can drive. In Christine the car may not have any one in the car but the car does drive itself and causes carnage on the roads which is the closest resembles to what I want to create.

If I were to do any thing in this week better I would only do one of my initial ideas as a mind map and add pictures to the other or even have one of them as a video and the other one as a audio recording. I would also ask the two people I the video above more questions and asked more people. When it comes to the secondary research I would add more films to my list of three films that I looked at.

Week 3

I also had to make a poster for my FMP so I did some research on some film posters and chose three that would help me gain ideas for my own. The posers that I chose to research are the posters for my three films that I did in the previews week. there were lost of parts in both posters that I will use in my own poster for example in the total recall poster Arnold Schwarzenegger,s face is slightly blacked out on one side. I will use that in my poster but I will have tow faces and they will be backed out between them. When it comes to I Robot I chose to focus on the title and or background. I chose to copy the size of the title as it make it the main focus. For the final poster I chose to use what they have done with the fire. I will have tack all of this information in to account when making my own poster. Meaning some thing may change and some not be use at all.

Next is the wider context research in which I have to look at real life situations were a similar thing as what my film is about has happened. This section in particular posed problem. When poring over many web pages I found out that nothing even close to a crash has happened with the self driving cars. As my FMP centres around the crashes that the self driving cars cause. But as not to miss out on the section I changed what it was asking me to wright by a small amount. So instead I disided to go in to more detail on the websites that i used in my bibliography.

The next thing was to start the planning for my FMP there were 6 parts for me to consider for this. They are location, character profile, sound, lighting, props and poster. so I started with the location as I said when coming up with the idea in the mind maps above there was one idea that stood out to me as i found my self already going through locations ideas and such. I was able to pick out three locations that would be the best for my FMP. This is why. My film will be set in a collage, a house and a mysterious dark room with lights. I will use the TV studio for the dark room. I will have it set in a collage as it works better with their age and will be easy to get around. They house will be owned by one of the actors so they can set it up easily and get the best shots. The dark room will be lit up by lights in a ring like an arena.

All in all I think that this week went well but if I were to do any of it better then I would start by giving more information in to why I choose the location that I did. That would have mean I would be able to give examples of shots that I would use when filming my FMP. I would also have used more than just my bibliography websites in my wider context research allowing me to use believable fact to back up what my character may say in the script. I would also have come up with more locations for my FMP.

Week 4

03/04/2017 Next thing to think about was my characters more specifically their profiles I had to come up with Who will be in my film? What will they look like? Clothing?Age? Gender? Considering the fact that I had to put so much planing in to my characters I came up with three. I used pitchers to give an example of what the characters will be wearing. I also gave some of my characters a gimmick that makes them more noticeable. It will also distinguish each character. To really build my characters I also gave them each a different personality. next on my list was sound this is were I note down all the sounds that the audiences will hear. this is what I plan for my audiences to hear. My audience will hear a range of sounds for starter’s I will have the sound of a ticking clock for the starting scene. I will also collect some game sound for the crashes that are the main focus of the film. I will also need some sounds of clapping hand to make the fight scene more fun to watch. I will also have prerecord sound for when the man behind the mask specks so I can make his voice sound evil and the sound will not be distorted by the mask.

The next thing to look into was my lighting the only time that I will have any measurable input on the lighting is in the final fight scene where there will be lights set up like an arena. There are other times when I will not have the favorable lighting conditions so the lighting will have to be done in editing. I will edit parts to make them darker and or lighter to convey the felling or mood I wish to create. after that I had to think about the kinds of props will use in my FMP. These props consisted of the killers mask, laptop and a news paper which all play a big part in my FMP they are what connects each part of the story and they will lead the characters from one scene to the next.

The last thing that i did in this week was come up with a a poster idea now as this is just an idea we had to a ruff sketch of what we hope to make later in Photoshop. for this we had to think of font we will use, images, certification, placement of posters. my animated sketch is below.

After this week I am confident that I will be able to make a good FMP but some parts are still left untouched. I feel that the anitation on the poster will help the production of the poster run even smoother. The planing of my lighting will make the final scene of my FMP look very exciting. The props were easy to come up with as I already owned the mask and the laptop and it is not that hard to get a free news paper. If I were to do any of it better then I would have come up with more props to use.

Week 5

10/04/2017

Now that the secondary research was done there was one last bit of primary research that had to be done. Now that I had a good idea of what wanted my poster to look like I had to gain more feed back in the form of primary research. So I made a survey on survey monkey to get this information I had a range of different questions so that I could get a lot of different information on what to do when I make my poster. Form all of the answers that I got I have found out that I should aim my poster at 18 - 24 year olds as that is the age that most people said that they were. The second thing that I got from this survey is that my poster should have a main image. There third is that if I use a main image which I will what it should be and the survey revealed that it should be the main character. Next I lernt that for the poster I should use a range of coulers like black blue and silver. I also found out which of the three tag lines that I came up with would be the most engaging. the tagline I will use is "how will you play". and finely I found out that my title should be the main focus of the poster.

Now that all the research was done I could start on my pre-production which starts with me writhing my script. I already had a few ideas for scenes that I wanted to have to my FMP more importantly was the starting scene. In full the script took 4 days to complete on the first day I got from the first scene up to the first scene in on of the actors homes. In this part the characters are introduced and the first crash is mentioned.

The next part was a little harder as I hadn't per thought of every scene making coming up with the words for the actors to say a different challenge entirely. Regardless in this scene I got a lot of good and strong plot points down. For example the killer contacts the tow friends via phone call. The killer explains that he is in control and they mist keep playing unless they want to be next.

If were to do any of it better I would have come up with more questions to ask those I handed out the survey to. I would also have given the characters more of an introduction rather than just them meting for example I could have given them an internal monologue. I could have also done a narration of the characters with images.

Week 6

16/04/2017

On this day I prerecord some game play and then typed up a second scene with the tow friends are playing the game on a TV and use the game in that scene. In this scene one friend is playing the game and the other is at a laptop writing up a programe. The on writhing the programe them slumps forwards and pants as if out of breath.

17/04/2017

For this day I had the characters standing at the entranse to where the killer is standing. Only one of the characters acherly ingages in a fight will the killer and the other goes off to find what the killer uses to control the cars.

18/04/2017

This was the finel day of script writing all that was left to script was my fight scene. In this scene I had the character known as John be the one who fights the killer. The fight scene took a bout 30 minutes to come up with as if it was to look goo and or realistic it would to be clear and that would mack it easy to coreagrarf. I also added a sort monologue at the end where I revel the on behind the mask by useing pitchers.

If I were to do anything better out of this whole week I would most likely Give the killer a gimmick like a catch frase of sortes. I would also give one of the fighters a marsalarts background.

Week 7

23/04/2017

Next thing to do for my preproduction was a story bord which as in the from of a tabel with tow columses. On one side there was a blank space for a drawing of what was happening in the film. On the other side there was a colem were I put information like SHOT/ANGLE/MOVEMENT and ACTION as I had a long script I would also have a long story bored. the story bord took just about as long as the script it took 5 days to complete. On the first day I got up to the part were the tow friends are in the classroom and are tacking about the crash.

Enter Chad on this day I got form were chad enters to the first scene were the tow friends are playing the game. for this i had to add a lot of sounds for this including the things that the characters say in the script. I also had to add in all of the actions that the characters do. for example one of my characters throws an XBOX controller on the ground. I would have to say that in the action area of the story bored.

For this day I found it alot harder to describe so all I got done was the phone call from the killer. Regardless of the little amount of work I got done I was still abel to come up with a way to mack the killers identity a secret until the end. When he specks over the phone his voice is all high pitched and electronic like a robots.

26/04/2017

I found this day much easer to describe so I got a large amount of work done got up to the actors standing at the entranes to the killers hide out. This was the big sersepense builder as the location of the killers hide out is never really reveled. Even when the friends run the programe that I mentioned in the script.

If I wee to do any of it better I would have planned on how to describe most of the film so that I would't have another incident like with the phone call. The overall turnout of this week is a good one. I got must of the story bord done and all that was left to do was the final fight scene.

Week 8

01/05/2017

By the end of this week I will have reached the dead line to have all of the research done. Luckily for me did have it done already so I went on to finish off my story bored. In that last part of my storybord left I did the fight scene between the killer and the one known as John.

02/05/2017

Now that the storybord was finished I was abel to move on to the shot list now this took weeks to complete as i had to go out for much of the time as I was needed as a cammra man for there peoples FMP's. But for I did get a lagre amount of work done on the first day as no needed me as a cammar man for that day so I got a large amount of work done. I got 20 shots down and out of the way.

03/05/2017

The next day I only got tow down they were a close up with no moment or angel where a character known as Chad says 'what was that'. The second on that I got down was the second part of Max's line which I completed the previous day. The full line is 'Chad I know that deep down that you boy clearly has trouble with basic conversation wants to play a game that is not in stores yet with me right'. With Cads line in between these tow words 'conversation wants'.

Over all the week was a successful and productive one I Got a good amount of work done for the week. If I was to do any of it better I would have plan my shot before putting them down on to the shot list. By planing before putting them int to the shot list I can get more done in a short amount of time.

Week 9

08/05/2017

On this day I got 3 shots on to the shot list but they were all good shots that are there to advance my cinematography. The shot's give an explanation about one of the characters characteristics. An explanation about one of the characters characteristics will show character development.

09/05/2017

On this day i got a large number of the shots down on to the shot list as i was not needed as a cammra man on this day. I got a total of 15 shots down to the shot list.This got me very close to the final scene is is the second and finale scene that is shot on the actors home.this is were they get directly challenged by the killer.

10/05/2017

On this day I got some more of my shot list done and by more I mean all of what was left to do. I got all the scene for the final fight scene down on to the shot list. The final shots took place in the TV studio and were all done with a cammra and no tripod meaning I get some grate shots from a low angel.

If I were to do anything in that week better then I would put more shots in to the fight scene to keep the audience on the egne of there seat. This would keep the audience guessing as to what will happen and who will win the fight. I would have also added a flash back scene to strengthen the friendship between the tow friends.

Week 10

15/05/2017

The next thing on my list of preproduction to do was the budget of all the props travel and other things we would need in our production. My budget was nothing I didn't have to pay a single penny hear is why. For my budget I did not have to pay any thing, as I all ready owned all the clothing props and I could easily get around using free travel on buses. Even though I could do all this I will give you prices for all clothing if I had not owned it previously. I will star with the T-shirt that my character john was wearing. It would have been £10.95 from amazon witch is were I previously purchased the item.The seconded item is the jacket that John is wearing I also purchased this from amazon so it would be £49.99. The final item is the masks that the killer is wearing the final fight scene I could not find the same mask so I got an example and it would be £8.95.

I next needed to make a location roprot for all the locations that I would use in my FMP. I had a total of Three locations in my FMP they were the TV studio a class room and one of the actors homes. here is a screenshot of them.

On this day I had one last bit of preproduction left to do and it was a risk assessment. given the lack of locations I used my risk assessment is some what short but never the less here it is. I could only come up with 5 risk that were in any way likely to occur.

All in all this was a productive week and the last week of the planing as the next week I finally started recording my FMP. If were to do any thing better in this week I would definitely think of some more risks to ad to the risk assessment I would also add more information to my location report.

Week 11

22/05/2017

For this week I started filming my FMP so to start off we had to travel to my house as the first scnen as well as tow others were al set in one of the actors homes. We got tow of the three scenes that needed to be filmed filmed this is because we hit some hiccups along the road meaning some times the cammra would stop recording suddenly and travelling there took longer than expected but then you how traffic can get. In the end we got all the scenes done.

23/05/2017

On this day as we made our way back to my house we thought to go over the script as to make the scene as best we could. We came up with idea of going over the script as we realised yesterday that we went fully ready to recorded the scene without knowing the words. we finished off the scenes that had to be done at the house and then went to clapham common to film bits of one of our groups members FMP.

24/05/2017

The next scene that had to be shot was the ending fight scene but for this we needed the TV studio and it had been booked until 12.00. So in the mean time that we had to wait I did some editing on the scenes that I had already gathered. When the time rolled around to get to the TV studio I had only properly edited the first scene were my character leaves his house. Once in the TV studio we had to set up the lights like it was an arena for the tow to have the big fight. Before that we had problems with the lights as not all of them would turn on. In the end we could not all the lights to turn after all so we had to work with what we had and my actors let me down at the start but in the end they pulled through and the fight looks decent.

As you can probably tell I got a substantial amount of work done in the week which means I am on track. If I were to do anything better I would have got actors who were raring to go and get filming so that once I had the film studio set up I could film and get out as fast as possible. I would also bring a second cammra as a backup in case like it did with the first it just stops recording as we were shooting.

Week 12

On his day I was ment to start editing but as I said did didn't have all my clips. So I used a near by and empty class room and got to recording my class room scene and only got a bit of it done. as my actors were not very comparative and were critasising my script.

30/05/2017

On this day my actors let me down as they needed there stuff to be recored so I had to recoded these and no more of my FMP got done.

31/05/2017

After this week we had a half term were we fished of our editing so I hoped my actors would have time to finish off what I had left to do but as it turns out they did not. So all I could do was begin editing what I had I did get the fight scene edited to a state were it looks like the actors are really trying to hurt one another.

This week was not a good on I did not finish my filming for my FMP and I hardly got any of the editing done. So you can probably guess what I would change. One my actors again tow my time managing skills. these tow thing would have increased the possibility of me completing what I planed to do.

Week 13

On this day I finished my editing for my FMP I got all the scenes edited ordered and cut so that the film vaguely makes sense with the lack of clips that I had access to.

Week 14 Final Week

12/06/2017

On this day after I exported my FMP I got to work on my poster for my FMP i had taken some shots in the TV studio previously for this very purpose. The shots that I took were a shot of just the villein in the mask and the hero's fasces that I edited in PhotoShop to mack them look faded in-between them.

13/06/2017

ON this day I used a shot of the hero and the villen at either ends of the shot using the lights in the TV studio to illuminate them and using the certanes in the background to mack it seam as if there is no background. I then used this to put them at other ends of my tital (City Of Games) I used a back background so I could put a code like effect inbertween the tow faces. As a final touch I put the actors names at the top of the poster to make it look like a real move poster.

On this day I presented my FMP to members of my class and gathered some feed back on it which I then used to evaluate my FMP. I also finished my poster in PhotoShop.
